Continuing my retrospective look into my journey towards Porsche ownership.

Expectations exceeded (August 21, 2023)

I've been taking a few notes along the way as we make our way through Europe in these glorious machines, so why not share a bit?

That's it then. Europe done and dusted.

What an epic adventure, and I'm not using that (rather overused these days) word trivially. This trip had it all, and after so many YEARS of waiting (roughly 37 months in all), it lived up to every bit of its billing.

The exact same can be said for the car.

I'd pored over every review out there. Watched every video. Studied photos from every angle, to the point that I felt I really knew all there is to know about the GTS save for the feeling of actually driving it. What that (somewhat obsessive at times) studying of the car virtually didn't convey was just how I would feel in it. I mean, it couldn't really, could it?

I had very, very high expectations, obviously, as 99.9% all of the punditry out there extolled the virtues of every facet of the car. The seats, the steering, the engine note, the power, the refinement, the quality. All of it. I headed across the Atlantic with all those elements in mind, and with the expectations bar set up there thanks to all that media consumption.

But I wasn't prepared for just how it exceeded those expectations in every way. It's one thing to read stuff. See stuff. Even hear stuff. But plonking your butt down into that Racetex™seat, cranking the key, and bringing the whole thing to life under your fingertips and feet? Well, it defies description as to how it all felt. How the printed page is a tough place to capture the sensations. How a YouTube video sounds thin and looks pale in comparison to the reality. How it takes a better writer than me to put the feelings into words.

It's like turning the focus ring on a lens and suddenly having the subject come into tack-sharp focus. Like everything up to that point on July 19, and all the days following suddenly crystallized those now-distant, 'fuzzy' words and images, and made them irrelevant really. Like next-level clarity.

Anyone fortunate enough to experience cars like this will know what I'm talking about. I can't wait to share it with my friends and family. Seeing and feeling it in person, some of them will 'get it' right away. Like me, now. They'll just know.

I always thought it was a rather cliché tagline, but it definitely sounds way less so now than before. It's got some real credibility in my mind:

PORSCHE. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE.

I couldn't be happier.

I have felt the same way about every Porsche I've owed, honestly. But experiencing that on your epic European road trip is a once-in-a-lifetime treat. Very happy it all worked out so great!

I’ve owned German cars exclusively since 1977 and many times I’ve thought “this is the best car I ever owned.” My latest car is a 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0. It is “THE BEST CAR I EVER OWNED.”

Congratulations on your patience, perseverance and chronicling your adventures.
Best,
Larry

Larry , I know your feelings though I have had a variety of cars since 1970 and I can easily say this is the " Best " Porsche I have ever owned! Well, since my wife and I have a Macan S, I am not stretching the facts by much. I do understand your passion and since I am pushing over 100+ cars, I can say my Cayman GTS ranks in the Top 10. I think we can both thank the Automotive Manufacturers because unlike many industries who resist change ( just like most humans do ) those that build cars realize the passion they elicit and they find change necessary to keep the fire aflame.

I do know as a die hard manual transmission advocate that getting a PDK was against my principles, my DNA, and my years of Instructing and teaching folks to heel and toe, etc. , but the damn thing is so fast and smooth, I knew it was a necessity for Time Trials. Having driven other auto shifters ( conventional, dual clutch, etc. ) I will echo your sentiments to a degree, as my Cayman is absolutely the best automatic transmission I have ever owned or driven!

The Canadian Chronicles of Cape Breton along the Cabot Trail has a nice ring to it! It has been a fun read for so many of us and I know I will look forward to further adventures.

Here's hoping you get your Caysters soon, since the Canadian Winter will curtail any long excursions , but that will only give you time to think up a new adventure for 2024.

Now being a Maritimer myself, I like the sound of that. Been a long time since I took that drive - feels like a summer 2024 plan in the offing. Would be somewhat fitting to take these cars back to where it all kinda started, on Deep Hollow Road outside Wolfville, back in the Acadia University days!

In the meantime, I shall hold out my hopes for a more local arrival in the next few weeks to at least get a bit of top-down, cool fall drives in before the white stuff falls.

Last year the S2000 didn't go away until Nov 12.....

Cheers,
Luke

Heck, I put the Viper up last year about the same time as snow and ice are not that uncommon in the heartland of the US in November. Since so many are enjoying your Chronicles you may consider a new idea while back in North America and that would be to end each adventure with a gathering of area Porsche owners for a short drive to end the adventure, along with an evening of showcasing said owners with the first views of the current trip. Sure it would take extra work to compile, but a gathering at a Hotel for eats/drinks with a group drive and picture prior , could be another way to even involve your new band of Cayster Chronicle followers.
