Hi all,
As the summer ends, and the onslaught of triple-digit days does too, I've been rethinking how my '87 turbo is setup. I've come to the conclusion that I've grown a little tired of my stock K26/6's powerband. My car feels very punchy between 3,500 – 5,250, but I find the big drop in power after that pretty anti-climactic. I am not really looking to make more than 325whp, I am more in search of better spool and more power on the top end.
Its an '87 turbo with:
- 2.5" exhaust
- Headers
- Lindsey Racing MAF kit and chipset
- 3 Bar FPR
- 80lbs injectors
- Cometic MLS headgasket
- Lindsey stage 1 head
- Currently has a Lindsey Boost Enhancer, but that's coming off the car very soon.
I have an Innovate electronic boost controller with an integrated AFR gauge and a Tial 38mm dual port wastegate that I am waiting to find the time to install. I figure now would be a good time to upgrade the turbo while it's under the knife.
What bolt-on turbo systems is everyone running? I have heard about the M44 Ultraspool/Voodoo, but there's hardly any information about them online anywhere. I've heard of the Evergreen systems too. Just looking to see what everyone's experience has been for a relatively mild build. Thanks!
Upgraded Turbo recommendations?

I'm a big fan of Vitesse Racing turbos sold by @Fast951. With your power goals, you might consider a 'cheater" k26/8 too -- which avoids some of the hassles of the bigger turbos and could get close to your goals. I have not tried the Voodoo stuff -- too much drama for me.

Did the Voodoo guys go out of business?Bergerac wrote: Fri Sep 22, 2023 5:24 pm Your be very lucky to find an Ultraspool or Voodoo, they're no longer made. Lots of people speak highly of the Raptor from Evergreen Turbo though.
What was the drama with the Voodoos?
I see the evergreens are hybrids. Tom, you have a Vitesse on your car? Does he use the factory bearing housing too? I am a little hesitant to put a replacement journal bearing CHRA back in the car.

Yes, I've had several Vitesse Racing turbos over the years -- each better than the last. My current turbo makes 1 bar of boost at 2800 rpm's and was good for 500rwhp on my 3 liter motor. I am far from a turbo expert, and Vitesse is proprietary about their recipes, but they seem to start life as Garett turbos (or at least parts of it) before Vitesse does it's thing to them. Honestly not even sure if Vitesse is still selling them, as I recall they were having issues sourcing parts. If you can get one, you'll like it though.TurboD wrote: Fri Sep 22, 2023 8:09 pm What was the drama with the Voodoos?

Re Voodoo, not my circus, not my monkeys. It was a Facebook thing, where I sincerely hope it stays.
I don't know what happened, I tried to contact him a while ago and got not response. He's still around on Facebook, there was a post a while back saying he ran out of the castings for the hotside and needed to order 100 to get more, maybe there wasn't enough interest?

FWIW I'm running an evergreen K27/6 "Raptor" and see 1bar of boost by 3000rpm and can hold it all the way to 6500rpm no problem. Definitely not an optimized turbo setup by today's standards, but it's readily available and an easy drop in that will yield decent spool and has the capacity to support modest power goals in the 300 - 340whp range.
However, I think what you describe about power falling off around 5250rpm is a function of the 8V engine/cylinder head, not the turbo.
P.S. seems like 80% non-sense, 20% good ideas/tech coming from the self proclaimed experts on those FB groups. Definitely want to take most that stuff with a grain of salt...
