Hey guys, been a while since I've been on the forum.
I have an 86 944 turbo whose sunroof operates but not exactly as it should.
I can open and close it with the ignition switch in the on position. But the problem is when I go to close it after having it open, if I keep holding the button to close it, the arms will go past the locked position to the retracted position and the back of the sunroof is basically loose at that point. This makes it tough to know exactly when to stop holding the close button.
The arms should stop in the locked position and the only time they should go to retracted is with the car in the accessory position - at least that's how I perceive the procedure to work.
Looking for clues as to where to start troubleshooting this wacky issue. I do have another same year and model car with a properly operating sunroof that I could swap parts back and forth with to test things if needed.
1986 951 sunroof works but not properly

Have you tested the limit switches? They tell the motor when to stop.
hmmm. I don't think I have. I know I tested the microswitch by the sunroof visor thing. i'll have a look at the limit switches. That whole contraption in the back kind of confuses me. LOL
So looking at clarks garage it says limit switches I and II are right next to each other, where is limit switch III located?
Nevermind, I found the diagram. Looks like it is in the same area but not right next to I and II.

After doing some reading on clarks garage, it looks like limit switch1 is where I should start looking. It should be going from open to closed when I move the sunroof from open to locked (from cam position 3 to cam position 2).
ok so i got this all sorted out. here’s what the problems were:
1. main relay bad - after watching a few youtube videos of guys with similar problems to mine and most importantly consulting clarks-garage.com troubleshooting steps, I tested the limit switches in all 3 cam positions and they all checked out perfectly. it then said to check pins on the console switch and then mentioned if all of those were fine it was probably the main relay under the hood. so since i have a fully operational sunroof 15 feet away in my other car, i borrowed the relay out of that one and then all of the functions worked properly but i still had other things to deal with. a new (used) relay is on the way.
2. lifting arms travel-range needed to be adjusted - I adjusted the arms on the teeth of the gears so that they would stop in the closed position rather than progressing all the way back to released position with key in the “on” position. (i think i got a little higher “lift” action in the open position as a result of this too)
3. clutch slip adjustment - the clutch had tightened up over time (as clarks-garage had also suggested was a common problem). so rather than stripping the plastic gears with my new-found ability to go into retract position I adjusted the tension on the clutch down to the 5nm spec on claks-garage. (the motor is designed to keep spinning once the arms make contact with the body of the car while you are holding the sunroof button, so the clutch needs to slip until you release the button) - this was the function that was non-operative using my my bad sunroof relay.

Thanks for this! I have the same issue... It was annoying when I had the stock sunroof in, now it's a CRUCIAL detail I have to pay attention to since I added a glass Saratoga top... LOLnotny41 wrote: Mon Oct 23, 2023 7:34 am ok so i got this all sorted out. here’s what the problems were:

Much appreciated,
