Cayman/Boxster Cyl. Bore Scoring

Hi Everyone
I'm brand new to this site (just registered a few min ago) and wanted to start with the question of possibility of some 987.2 generation of Cayman/Boxster cylinder Bore Scoring issues .
My understanding was that by the time Porsche started the second generation of the 987 ( 987.2), all that night was over, but it was a couple of months ago that to my surprise, some new and/or potential new buyer of a 2009 Boxster had the car inspected and was diagnosed with the dreaded "Cylinder Bore Scoring" .

So, I was wondering if anyone here had or have any experience with the 987.2 generation Cyl. Bore Scoring Or have any answer on that ?

I don't have an answer to your question but I imagine someone at the site may eiher know or will have heard something.

Yes, I'm a 36 plus years veteran of PCA member, a racer and a hardcore, (but NOT fanatic) enthusiast of all Porsches and all other interesting car manufacturer of performance cars .

Since 1985, I have had (and still have), driven daily and/or raced many Porsches of different years and models, but mainly the early 911's .

My current Porsches are; a 1973 911T with a 3.0 L, race suspension and more, A 1985 944 full blown race car and a 2012 Porsche "Cayman R" (in the launch color of Peridot Green) that my wife and I are very proud (please forgive my bragging here), but this car won the 2022 PCA Zone 7 Concourse series and the Monterey Werks Reunion National concourse Boxter and Cayman class last August that makes our family very happy and proud .

Congratulations! That would be for all that you mentioned - the 36+ years w/PCA , the racing and the 944 race car , a rarest-of-the-rare, 5-paint can unicorn color (according to Rennbow) Peridot Green Cayman with its various Concurs wins

Please post pictures! There is a huge 944 contingent here and lots of Cayman/Boxster fans, so both the full-on race car as well as the Peridot Green Cayman would be great to see.

Welcome aboard eurojapan! Sounds like a great collection of cars. We do indeed have many 944 owners on Carpokes and a lot of collective knowledge, and it sounds like that collective knowledge just expanded with you! What are the odds that we'd have at least two 944 owners who also have a Peridot Green Cayman R? Check this out....

Also a note about the person sitting in my '12 Cayman R, he's "Mark Porsche'', Son of the original Porsche 911 designer of 1964 (Butzi Porsche) and grand son of Dr. Ferry Porsche who was walking around and checking some unique cars and this was just last year at the 2022 Monterey Werks reunion where we won the Boxster/Cayman concourse class !

I'll try uploading more pictures of my early 911's and more as the time goes by, just for fun, and hopefully adding more pictures doesn't come across as showing off and I certainly don't want to bore people with too many pictures of my cars

Great pics and a great story/pic revolving around the Porsche family member sitting in your special Cayman! Pretty cool for sure!!

More pics are always good - no worries there, so post away. As far as them being out of place here, well I'd say you're fine - you are the OP after all so it's your thread. You're also in the correct sub-forum for your Cayman.

On the other hand, more readers might see you in the New Member Welcome forum, either as a new topic or better yet, a post in the existing topic New Member Check-In. Introductions there are always good.

And then there's your 944 race car (another sweet car!) which deserves it's own limelight in the proper 944 forum plus maybe even a pic or two in the Racing forum. Lots of options!

By the way, there is an episode of Wheeler Dealer where they rebuild a 911 motor with 'bore score' if you want to see more about it in these motors. A condensed YouTube version is below. Not sure when/where the term 'bore score' became popular, but galled and scored cylinders can happen on just about any car, especially cars with aluminum alloy cylinders. Some cars are just way more prone to it. My sister's Vega tore itself apart this way in the 70's and 944 Turbo owners are all too familiar with it. My original 944 turbo chewed up its cylinder pretty badly too (aided by too much boost/heat/piston expansion no doubt. Excuse the blurry 20-year-old picture, which I think was taken on a state of the art Mavica 'digital camera' with built-in 3.5" floppy disk.
