All -

Just had the turbo rebuilt and am reassembling to car (actually it is already on there but time to think about exhaust.

When I took the exhaust off, someone (maybe factory) used M10 studs on the turbo for the output pipe to the exhaust. I cannot find these studs in PET.

Is it critical to use studs for this purpose versus bolts? I can imagine the studs would be better long term but interested to see everyones thoughts.

The studs are part # 900 081 052 02

The metal lock nuts are part # 999 084 047 02

This is 100% the best solution, Porsche metal lock nuts are pricey but last a very long time

Thanks guys. I "knew" in my mind that the studs were the best plan -tt just needed confirmation from the experts!

Scott,
Who did you use to rebuild your turbo? Not sure if I will need to do mine (still need to check end play and run out) but thought I would start collecting names.
Thanks

Are we talking studs on the turbine outlet or the crossover inlet? Seems this point wasn't well defined here yet.

I used a place outside of Forest City, NC for mine - Complete Turbo Services. I am about 40 min away so I took it to them and picked up. Quick turnaround and good looking work.

I am referring to the turbine outlet. Did not realize however, that studs were used elsewhere? I may need to go back and check. By crossover inlet do you mean the turbine inlet from the crossover? I am pretty sure the holes on my turbine are no threaded there and would require an M10 bolt.

What downpipe do you have? Some aftermarket have quite a quick bend right off the flange and don't allow studs. I just gave one (SFR or Fabspeed?) away because of that reason. It was essentially only held on by 3 bolts. The 4th was modified and had almost no threads to hold it and you couldn't get a wrench in there to tighten it very well.

My car is apart right now but I don't have a factory turbo.. It does not have threaded holes to mount studs on it and the exhaust pipe has 1 captive welded nut. Otherwise the holes are also not threaded. So you'd have to tap some holes on the turbo to mount studs there and cut off the captive nut. Assuming there's room to maneuver it on the studs... if someone has done it before, would be nice to confirm.

I’ll take some pics tonight and post. One of my pipes does have a not welded to one spot but I can’t remember which one.

I THINK all of my stuff is factory but I am not sure.

The last pic shows the turbine inlet connection from the crossover with the nut welded to the back. That really does not like the type of weld I would expect from the factory but maybe so.

Any thoughts or insights appreciated!
