Rebuilding my PS pump (86 951). How easy should the front pulley turn after a rebuild? Right now it is very tight - almost binding. I think I have got the front seal into seated correctly and that may be the issue. Spring clip is in the groove as it should be.

This pump was full of green goop that is now all cleaned out - but I am wondering if that seal is an issue or if it should be somewhat difficult to turn.

I did my '86 pump years ago, and don't remember it being any tighter after the rebuild. Below is an oldie but goodie from @Rennbay where they say it should spin freely too. I think you need to open it back up and figure out why it's so tight, unfortunately.....

A bit of resolution here. I guess the ____ time was the charm (lost count). Lubed everything up again (maybe more than I should have used) and put it back together and everything seems good. Perhaps the last dose of ATF just got in the right places to make everything work. It also occurred to me that when in operation the pressure inside the housing is probably enough to keep the shaft pushed out as far as it will go, which is where there would be no binding anyway. Nonetheless, all seems good now. Thanks to everyone for weighing in!

Glad you got it to spin nicely. As assembled, does the shaft still have all that axial (in and out) play you show in your second video? Next time I'm under my car I can check to see if mine is like that, but I don't remember that when I did mine and it seems like the pulley would be able to move in and out of alignment with the crank pulley that way?

Does not move axially like it did the first time and in the video. I am not sure what I did differently other than adding a good bit more ATF before closing it up.

Only thing I can guess is that maybe the halves weren't oriented correctly when it bound up? Did you mark them like shown in the rennbay video?

How difficult was the rebuild? Considering doing the same.
