I skimmed through the thread so in case I missed someones comment…

There are technical instructions on Loctite’s website regarding removal of hardware

We have a bunch of the documents saved in our library at work. Without digging out of the library for exact specs I remember it as loctite calling for heating to around 150 fahrenheit to release

We use around two dozen various loctite products.

Heat was an issue because of the concern of damaging other things above the point I was heating with a larger torch. I tried several times using a smaller more precise torch on the bolt area but it was just not getting the job done.


The only real corrosion on the car is on the slave calendar bolts and I'm concerned about breaking them. When I get around to that I'm going to buy an inductive heater which is probably what was the best thing for these bolts.

Yea it seems the helicoil + blue loctite is going to do the job. I got the timing belt back on the car last night and ran into a need for Loctite 574 for the balance shaft sprockets. I have every major auto parts store in my city with most having 4-8 stores and not a single one of them stocks anything Loctite. So I'm off to figure out what the Permatex equivalent is so I can pick some up on my way home tonight.

Kind of annoying that every thing you can work on always calls for Loctite by name but it's difficult to source locally. I could always order it but right now I've got the time so I don't want to wait around a few days for it to show up.

I'm hooked on Amazon for exactly that reason. Probably helps that I'm in Silicon Valley, but they make it awfully hard to justify driving to a store-- often being able to deliver faster than I could even make it to a store -- which is simultaneously great and kind of sad. :wtf:

For what it's worth, Permatex does not list an equivalent to 574 on its official cross-reference page.

That's not to say something they sell wouldn't work out ok, but if they sold something close to 574, you'd think it would be on their list...

Yeah, I'm sure it differs by location. They no-doubt locate inventories closer to big amazon-addicted populations like Silicon Valley...
