I roughed up a CAD model in Fusion 360 based on the measurements you posted, and did a rough print. Not entirely sure how you want to recess the speaker? The walls are all pretty thin. Do the outside dimensions matter, or can we make it everything thicker as long as the screw holes and speaker opening line up?

So something like this for the recess? If so, can you write in dimensions for the recess and openings?

Tom,

I "drew" on your picture to try and illustrate what I was thinking.

Would it be possible to make the sides (I outlined one in red, but it would be the same for the other) level with the recess? (Where I put the blue dots) There is a raised portion on the trim piece (I'll attach a photo for you to see) and I'd be worried it might interfere with that, being too wide.

Pardon the nasty looking hole. I had to remove a raised inner section that interfaced with the original tweeter.

Ah, now that I see the panel, I wonder if something like this would be way easier/simpler....

That would definitely work, the only thing that would need to be considered is that enough of the plastic stud would have to protrude in order to secure it with the clips I have.

They are dished, and bite into the stud (I’m sure they weren’t designed to be removed but I won that fight carefully)

The studs are 11.5mm tall. In order to have enough space to get the clips to bite (the top of the studs are tapered) the flange would have to be no more than 5mm thick around the stud. The clips have a diameter of 11.5mm, as well.

Can you post some pictures of the tweeter too? I'm thinking even the simple design needs a recess to clamp the tweeter in place? Also, how high is that football-shaped ridge on the panel?

Here is a clearer drawing for the tweeter:
