I doubt I'm anywhere near longest 944 road trip, have done longer trips in our even older and more questionable cars . . .

I drove from Santa Barbara, CA to Houston, TX and back during the holidays one year (maybe 2008?), not a super exciting trip, was able to stretch its legs during the isolated stretches of I-10 in west TX, 80 MPH speed limit, tested the speed limit of the 951 :) Construction on I-10 during the return trip meant that I cut towards the Rio Grande in west TX, drove through numerous little border towns, which was quite interesting---I prefer that sort of drive if time isn't of the essence.

Fun fact: El Paso at the western tip of TX is closer to Los Angeles than it is to Houston . . . .

The other 951 journey was a trip from SB to Portland and back, drove CA Hwy 1 for the entire length of CA and into OR before cutting to 101 in Grants Pass. I only had 4 total days off work, but really wanted to do the far northern section of Hwy 1, so drove 21 hours nonstop besides gas and meal stops---did 101 the entire way back, so that was 14-15 hours. That was a far more scenic trip.

Plus, many, many trips up and down 101 between SB and the SF Bay Area. And driving to and from many track events at Willow Springs, Buttonwillow, Laguna Seca.

The 951 is amazing for that sort of journey. Fast, comfortable seats and driving position, long-legged, huge gas tank so 400+ miles between fill-ups, which outlasts the bladders of most. Mine became slightly compromised in this area with its slow evolution into a track car (and I now rarely go to track events), but it is still quite comfortable on long trips except on truly deplorable sections of freeway like parts of 101 and 405 in LA. And a blast on back roads!

I would check the condition (resistance and voltage drop) on the alternator-to-starter main cable first. If it is the alternator, quite a few have done the Quest conversion and I see why. I have sold a few ready-made Quest conversion harnesses.

Does anyone know what pulley is needed if one were to buy the alternator by itself elsewhere since the ebay units dont seem to have the best reliability?

I'm 99% sure I have a few (from failed eBay alternators). Email or PM me and I'll set you up. :)
