There’s also contacts made for different size wire. So it’s good idea to make sure you have the right ones.

Since we have assembled a group that shares my bizarre interest in electrical connectors...
Alas, I too am deeply afflicted by this malady. :shifty:

Regarding the JPT contacts, there are a variety of tab lengths, some of which are for wires with different insulation diameters, and some of which are for use with individual wire seals (TE's Single Wire Seal system). This drawing provides a good summary of the available options: https://www.te.com/commerce/DocumentDel ... 46_A17.pdf

Note the two major groupings of contacts in the table on the left (SINGLE WIRE SEAL and UNSEALED). Then look at the K value in the CRIMP DIMENSION column, which is the length of the insulation/seal crimp tabs. For unsealed contacts there are various dimensions to accommodate different insulation diameters. For sealed contacts, the tabs are all the same length (4.6mm).

As SirLapsalot showed, the contacts intended for use with seals have a "port" in the bottom of the crimp area, presumably to provide mechanical grip for the ridge on the end of the seal.

I probably should make a more organized attempt to find them. I've ordered maybe a half dozen part numbers over the years -- all from mouser or digikey -- and have yet to get one with the small offset tangs. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever even seen a female one like that? The harness in question uses 18-guage wire, so I stick to pins in that size. And I do use GXL wire, which has thinner insulation than an auto-parts store hook-up wire, but it still seems like all the tangs are made to fit around cigars. I have ended up with the cupped pins made for the silicon seals, and actually used the seals for a while, but even the non-seal ones are way too big. Maybe I should study the part number coding in that pdf and make more of an effort to come up with the right part number -- just thought maybe someone here had already cracked the code. ;)

Actually, I was just thinking about doing something like this. I used a lot of GXL in my harness as well (although in hindsight I wish I had used TXL). So I was thinking to make a table of contact part numbers for various sizes of GXL/TXL/SXL, plus the original Porsche metric sizes. Trick with the latter is that I don't know the insulation diameters for the original harness wires and I'm away from my car right now.

These are also excellent sources for sensors, wire, pins, connectors, and boots. I used them extensively when I built my harness.

This thread is a fantastic resource. Like most 951 owners my wire harness isn't in great condition. I didn't realize how accessible the connectors are if I ever want to build my own replacement harness in the future. Thank you for sharing!

That's who I used when I needed some of the OE color combinations. They sell increments as short as 5ft and have great customer service.

That’s good to know.

What gauge wire did you order and was it same size as the factory DME wires?
