Has changing the proportioning valve made a noticeable difference to the rear brakes performance. That's a part I'm planning to fit, now that I'm using big reds and 955 discs on the front.

Yes, with the added braking at the front it is needed to balance the braking front to rear so you don’t swap ends during hard braking.

Increasing the performance of the front brakes without fitting the modified proportioning valve, wont cause you to swap ends. You might lock up the front brakes though, that's why the modified valve lets the rear brakes do some more work.

Whether the valve is needed or not depends on several things such as how hard you are braking, how fast you were going when braking, geometry settings, braking in a straight or in a curve, how much stuff you are carrying in the boot, etc... I drove a year with the stock valve and it was mostly "ok" but the balance is I think definitely better with the 5/33 valve.
Good job and nice-looking car. Love the Cup 2s, though I'm biased.
