The BMW M3/M5 rod bearing failure section is interesting. My friend owns a 2008 M3 which he did a rod bearing change on where I learned of their issue.

Curious next time I get an engine going to see the oil pressure using a 5W30 at higher RPM’s

Foaming is an issue people have concerns with at the track in our cars.

Lighter oil less foam issues.

The info there gives me more incentive to coat the inside of the engine with an oleophobic coating.

The hotter temperatures driving in traffic is what let me to 20W50 and that is using my Wizard rad oil cooler combo rad I bought from Chris White.

On high temps…A couple of years ago, a buddy and I went to Porsche Parade at Lake of the Ozarks. Outside ambient was 105 F. The oil temp was easily over 210 F, highest I have ever seen it. Was still running the trombone lines to the Lemke external cooler at that point. Upgraded to the Elephant Racing finned lines and thermostat that fall. Brownie has been much happier ever since. And yes, the RatBlog is long; but best info out there, I think. Interesting the high rating given Quaker State’s most recent synthetic product. But correct that 20W50 is de riguer for air-cooled, and VR-1 (silver bottle) is available at O’Reilly’s, and reasonably priced… Black bottle even better, where you can find it…

I used Mobil1 15w-50 for years in my 951. The oil pressure gauge was always pegged at max. I switched to Mobil1 0w-40 Euro and the oil pressure gauge acted normally. I would not use 50 weight for road driving

I have been running Penzoil Platinum and Ultra Platinum for almost 300,000km on my 2007 FJ cruiser. No issues.
I buy 5 liters Ultra Platinum on sale for 23.00$ max Canadian. Platinum under 20$. Just depended what was on sale when I needed it.
I am going to try the Quaker State next as it’s a few dollars cheaper anyway.
I also have used the Penzoil in our new 2020 QX50. Will try Quaker state in that also.

When I pulled my 3.0L apart the engine bearings were like new. As I mentioned earlier I was running Millers classic Nano 20W50.
Engine came apart for unrelated issue and it’s going to be Nikasiled rather than Aulusil.

My experience many years ago was I was using a well regarded synthetic 20-50 in my 86 951 and started going through oil, like crazy...a quart every 600 to 700 miles. In researching this issue, I found a recommendation to try Valvoline VR1 racing oil. I remember finding some on clearance at my local chain parts store. Once I changed to VR1, the extreme oil consumption ended and I was back to my regular oil leak replenishment cycle. I am still using VR1.

My car burns through VR1 (non-synthetic version) relatively quickly but hardly a drop with LiquiMoly products (10w40, 10w60) go figure

Never tried synthetic VR1

These flat tappet engines need high zinc content oil to protect the camshaft, also use conventional oil not synthetic.
Lucas SAE 10W-40 Hot Rod Motor Oil has high zinc content.
