Thom wrote: Fri Jul 26, 2024 1:13 am Well, this little incident was insignificant compared to the funerals but a bit strange that the phone really had to fall on the wrong spot at the only moment in the whole trip when I "needed" the power... bad vibes?

Re axles, is xschop still around?
I found an old post from @Tom on the "old" board saying xschop made for him custom axles to be used with 108mm CV joints.
The axles and CV joints have held up since that post, though my car is much tamer than it was back in those days. I haven't seen or heard reference to xschop in many years. You might check with the guys on 944hybrids to see what the V8 guys are using these days -- xschop was part of that crowd I believe. That said, I strongly suspect that most of the CV problems are related to movement of the transaxle. That little rubber hanger just isn't up to the task when the power gets up there. I tried semi-solid mounts and hated the noise and vibration, so opted for urethane-filling the mount. If that's not enough for your car, I'd be inclined to fabricate some form of panhard bar for the transaxle itself...

p.s., have not forgotten about our other project. First try was a flop, but I'll get it....
I tried to contact him a year or two ago when I was still thinking about going the V8 route but got no response.

Not 100% sure this is what I have as I bought mine over a decade ago via LR. But there was a glitch and they (LR) provided something that was not any upgrade. I went back and forth a little but Dave did sort me out with the correct items. I had also gone directly to the 'DSshop' who redirected me back to LR. Not sure on the relationship currently. Possibly try this first.

$1700!! Might have to check what the LOBB kit uses, the 01E conversion is starting to look more affordable.

Not a bad point. I suppose if you were thinking of converting from 5 speed to 6 speed then the LOBB kit might make quite a bit of sense. I believe the 968 'boxes are getting pretty pricey now.

It is not clear to me if the axles used either by LR or the DS shop are standard 930 items, listed by some other vendor at a reasonable 235€ each.
I guess LR always provide any of these axles with the same spacers, which would suggest that at least the shafts for the 968 gearbox may not be 930 shafts due to their unequal lengths.

ETA : Found lots of good info here.

Right, so it looks like 968 gearbox users like me are... shafted and don't have the option of just ordering early, 33 spline reinforced EMPI CV joints because later style turbo and 968 shafts are 25 spline rather than 33 for the early 944 and 930. What's not to dislike...

Yes, tossing up if I should stick with the S2 box and see if it will break or try the 01E. The 01E ratios available don't seem great though. I guess I should wait and see how much power I end up with, I'm only planning to run 18psi max and it should be quite easy to limit power in 1st with my ECU.

I racked up another 3,000 km since last week, enjoying a "business" trip to Romagnia, Italy. The 944t loves the highway and keeps returning 30 mpg cruising in 6th at 150 km/h at ~3000 rpm. My passenger, who daily drives a Panamera V8S, owns 2 vintage Bugattis and is generally extremely critical with all cars, eventually admitted the experience was just "fabulous".

Thanks.
Here is some more pictures of the journey, with a break in Switzerland to enjoy a day of pre war motoring and an interesting bovine encounter in the lower Alps. One of the cows seemed so impressed with the car that she "let loose" right when I drove past her and left some "signature" on the front fender, which was thankfully later washed off with heavy rain.
