It fits on my spiffy Autozone battery. My Iceshark cables get in the way a little, so I modified mine for that, but with stock cables it would fit fine I'm sure.

Since determining that my enine mounts were toast, I hunted around a bit. OEM are awful pricey! Instead I bought a set of Hamburg-Technic from 944online. $942 vs $136 for the pair felt like it's worth taking the risk. After reading a lot of peoples opinions and experiences I'm not so sure anymore. If they only last a few years I'm probably ok with that.
Also bought battery cover while I was there. Thanks for the info Tom!

Do any of you have experience with the HT mounts?

Back in the day, virtually all aftermarket mounts were prone to quick failure. That message was driven home hard on the forums, so most people have avoided them ever since if they can. I've do wonder if any of the current after-market mounts are any better than the ones that generated that 20-year-old folklore. You have to imagine they are now built in different factories, with different materials, specs, and techniques -- so you never know... I wouldn't be overly optimistic though.

Fair enough. Well, since I have them, I'll play guinea pig. I planned to do the job yesterday until another project car took preference. Looks like changing those mounts will be a real "good time", so I'm not in a hurry. Report to follow

A few weeks ago my odometer quite working again after 176.6 miles of function. I have been busy so decided that was a later problem. Based on condition of some of the plastic in there I thought I would find the rod that my new gear rides on would no longer be in the plastic retainers. Pulled it apart and everything looks fine. I spun the motor and the trip followed. So all well mechanically and didn't see anything out of place. One capacitor on the board looked a little suspicious, but tested fine. Put it back together and went for a spin. Everything is working again ... I'm not sure what to think, so I'll just monitor it.

On another note, my horn slip ring and contact are trashed! I see these items are available for the non airbag 944.1. Looks like the same part as my 86 though?




One last thing. I installed the battery cover. It's a little snug with the rubber insulators on the terminals. Still clips into place though. I may trim it a little to reduce flex over the terminals. Either way, it fits!

If memory serves, the column side comes as with the blinker/stalk assembly, which is spendy. I'm not sure if you can buy the right part separately? My guess is you could cut a strip of copper and get creative with a pop rivet gun, if you have the pioneering spirit.

Any chance the plastic gears on your odometer have excess side-to-side play, such that they can slide off their mating gear?

I had to trim my battery cover too, for the same reason.

O i have plenty of the pioneering spirit! Have already thought of creative ways to fix the stalk side. No way I'm spending that kind of money just for a horn contact! Seems I may be forced to on the wheel side though. Or I just find a decent used wheel when I head down to Elliot at 944Barn.

The gears do have more side to side than I think they should. The way the worm gear on the motor pushes actually keeps great engagement though. I may add a small spacer if/when the issue returns. Your gear still looks just like the day I put it in. Thanks again!

I once bought a right-hand drive steering wheel ring by accident and probably still have it somewhere in the dark corners of my garage. I'm wondering if you could do something with that?

I ran those odometer gears non-stop for over 50k miles on the bench and it still looked new. It's made out of super strong resin (Formlabs Rigid 10k). If it stops again, I'd try some spacers. I've made similar spacers in the past out of clear plastic packaging material retrieved from the garbage can.

I'm sure I could do something with that ring if you come across it.

The spacer wouldn't need to be much. Next time it's apart I'll see if I can get a thrust measurement. Then a spacer from whatever I have laying around is a great idea!

Well... good news and bad news. The bad news is I cannot find that right-hand drive ring contact for the steering wheel. The good news is I have a brand new, still in Porsche baggie, left-hand drive version, part # 928.347.099.00 No idea how I ended up with this in my garage, but am thinking maybe I exchanged the wrong one after already sourcing the right one for my car. I dunno... At any rate, if you pledge your never-ending allegiance to Carpokes, get everyone you've ever met to join, and name a warm-blooded pet or favorite houseplant after me, I'll send you this one gratis.
