Sounds plausible. My bad for blaming Porsche. I'll have to dig out my 81 Vanagon speedo and see what it looks like. I have two cars from 73 that have VDO gauges that haven't given me issues to date. Hope I didn't just jinx them.

@Tom : Hmmm, good question about the 968 compatibility. I get things wrong all the time with that model, when I just assume it's basically like the S2. I'll dig into it more and see what I can find out.

Yeah, let me know. More than happy to make a 968 version while I'm at it. In the meantime, I made tiny little adjustments to the model (shortened it by 1/10mm so it didn't press on the c-clip) and printed it in the fancy "Rigid 10k" resin at 50 microns. I'm blown away by how nice this resin prints. To the bare eye, these look like they came out of a plastic mold -- the detail is awesome. See pics below. The nylon one on the right is from eBay (E30 products) and the one on the left is 3D printed. Fits and works like a charm, so I have it running on my bench cluster now -- I'll let it run a few thousand miles this time before I call it good, but pretty sure this will bring the price of 944 odometer gears down to a dollar or two. :)

Good work! Mine is 15 years old, so it will not be long before it breaks again.

That looks great!

When my odometer gear first broke years ago, I saw Jeff from Odometer Gears at a vintage BMW show, and he sold me both types of late 944 odometer gear for the price of one. As stated in the link below, he told me there is no way to know which tooth count your late 944 cluster has without taking it apart. Of course mine is broken again, so I need another one, and neglected to document the tooth count the first time around, and have no idea what I did with the second gear :)

This is awesome!!!

The gear you made is for the 951, right Tom? 20x21? I have a 20/22 in my box of parts that I pulled out of my 951 speedo because it was incorrect. I put the right sized one in it to make it read correctly, but I wouldn't mind having a spare or two for the 951. That being said, if anyone needs a 20x22 gear, I'd be happy to mail it out.

Yes, mine is the 20-21 gear. I'd love to get my hands on the 20-22 gear so I can model it and print them! More than happy to send you a few spare 20-21 gears (and the battery isolators I've been meaning to send forever). PM me your address (for the 10th time I'm sure --sorry) and I'll get it all out asap. :)

I can't find your PM. Maybe just email me at [email protected] (and include your own mailing address) and we'll finally make all this happen. :)
