I've been following a late-in-life mantra that I don't want to be that $%@#*&^!!! PO, the one who casually "short-cuts" stupid stuff. Stupid stuff includes cases where doing it right is no tougher than taking the short-cuts. I still study fire-fighting for the afterlife. Just in case...

Got a chance to make it right? Cheaper than I think it would be for me, trying to find enough extinguishers in the afterlife. I'm still gonna need a lot of them.

I am 110% with you!! If its worth doing then do it right! Most instances it could have been done properly in less time and cost. Seam sealer in the mirror motor assembly is truly mind boggling. Nothing appears broken that would supply motivation for such a hack.
The door card is my next adventure today. Instead of sourcing the proper hardware it was ALL pop riveted in place. Spent some time in the PET determining what is supposed to be there last night. A little fiberglass card repair/reinforcement is also in the plan. Bit by bit I am getting there.

The new motor assembly is indeed like new! At least by looks. It does work as intended, but one of the motors makes a lot of noise in the gear reduction. I'd lube it up if I knew how to get it apart.

I can't seem to get a break. While the mirror is off I ordered new rubber gaskets for both mirrors. Well they don't match my mirrors. This is the driver's side. Drinker's side is a mirror image.


I noticed a 928 number on the mirror. Seems suspect. Early/late difference perhaps? I'll have to check the parts diagram.
Definitely a different shape than my gaskets though.

FYI
Talking with Steve at 944online he tells me that a mirror with a 928 part number uses an early style gasket and 944 part number uses late style gasket.
According to the VIN my 86 should be "late model". This is the second time I've found early model parts by ordering gaskets/seals that don't fit. The first was the sunroof.

If anyone needs mirror gaskets for their late model, I know where you can pick up a set
