I find it interesting how widely experiences seem to differ on this and other technology that one would think might be more consistent.
For me, it doesn't matter if my phone and key fob are in separate pockets, are in the same pocket or are both in the same hand as I approach the car for unlock or touch the indentation for locking. They all work equally well.

I have found that the pocket that they key is in has to be pretty close to the handle, as well as being in front or to the side makes a difference.

My Entry & Drive behaviour variant is:
Trunk/Frunk/doors work flawlessly for entry, lock / unlock etc.
However, for starting the car it’s fussy where the key is. Pants pocket is inconsistent, as is the door bin. Hold the key in the palm of my hand (like an offering to the Porsche gods) while sitting in the driver’s seat = Good.

This is also an issue when driving. I occasionally get a warning message about the key fob not being present, when it's two feet away, in my pocket.

OK, that is not a problem I've seen. Left pocket has always worked for me.
I do carry new fob batteries in the gloveboxes of both the 718 and Audi, however. If the fob battery falls below the voltage threshold while driving, the ensuing alerts and warnings are very intrusive, especially in the Audi.

I have all the issues people listed here plus the ones that people said they don't have. It intermittently won't lock, won't unlock, wants me to insert the fob in place of the plastic thingy. It worked perfectly for about a year when I first got the car (it was already 8 years old then) then it started with these glitches. Removing the battery or replacing it seem to help but it's not the same as it was. Weird...it's a shame because it's one of the best features ever. Glitches or not I'm never going back to rooting around in my pocket for a key like a pleb!

The Keyless Entry system relies on a number of antennas. I don't know all of their locations, or how to check/test them. I think faulty, failing, or obstructed the antennas may play a role in some of these issues. Along with RF interference.
Here is one antenna:
