Well, I took the car for a drive last night in the rain and ended up popping the wiper fuse in that I had taken out when I found the problem. I can stop the wipers now! I have absolutely no clue why, but I’m just going to count my blessings and leave it how it is, although I will probably find myself back on this page when it inevitably does happen again.

Did you ever pull the relay when it was malfunctioning?

I did not. What could the issue have been/still is if the wipers are now operating as normal when I put the fuse back in?

Some intermittent connection. Unfortunately, the intermittent connection could be the switch, any connector in the path, the relay contacts, the electronics in the relay, or the internal motor contacts, so at this point we don't know anything other than your car is wired up correctly, which is a good thing and not a given in these cars after 30-40 years of prior ownership.
If and when the problem comes back, do come back and we will walk you through the diagnostic process to find the failing component.

Agreed on all points... That said, I'd suspect a sticky relay if pulling it out and putting it back in seemed to 'fix' the problem. Next time it happens, I'd bang on the relay to see if it unsticks...
