I am in the camp of "leave it alone". The mess, time consumed and potential risk to the bores is not worth it in my opinion. If you must have clean piston tops, rig up a water injection system to steam clean them while the engine is running.

Hmm.. not sure cleaning that buildup is just for aesthetics. It got me from this

cleaning the piston tops would not effect emissions - since you had to take the whole top end apart you probably fixed something else that changed the emissions (vacuum leak, bad gasket, etc)
