Rattles, Squeaks, and Clunks, Oh My!

For those who have door rattles. Here was my process (for all my cars that had bad door panels).

1) Either leave your door panel on, or off, does not matter really.

2) Hook your phone up so it plays through the speakers.

3) Play this youtube video through your speakers, and turn up the volume.



4) Go through all the frequencies, you will be able to isolate EXACTLY where the rattle is coming from. Then you can try to fix it and try that same frequency again to see if it fixed it.

The frequencies are meant to mimic RPM ranges... So, 30 to 40hrz is similar to the frequency of a low RPM rumble...

This can also work for some dashboard rattles. If you are examining your passenger door, put the fader to the right so all the energy is going through the passenger door, and vice versa.

When you play it through your speakers, you will. It plays a frequency, not a typical audible sound like a song, per say. So, play it on your phone, via bluetooth, through your car speakers, and turn up the volume... Trust me, you will hear it haha

It works on my phone. Just played it in the 944 and found at least one clear rattle in the driver door panel!! Post of the week!!!

There seems to be a high level of variability from car to car and I guess driver to driver. I tend to be very sensitive to noises that should not be there. I have one intermittent buzzing sound that I have yet to diagnose, so far I think that is pretty good.

Agree that's some great work on 71eh's part! Definitely detailed with info we can use going forward.

Noises of that sort also drive me up the wall, made worse by the fact that I still have excellent hearing. The GT4 is by its nature a much louder, harsher ride vs the GTS. The suspension definitely lets you know when you go over anything that's not smooth, compounded by the LWBs. However, my GT4 has been surprisingly good in the NVH arena outside of some issues with the Cantrell roll bar that had a slight buzz on certain road types. I was finally able to (mostly) solve that.

The GTS had a few obvious noise/vibration issues when I first got it last month and I'm not sure how the previous owner wasn't bothered by that, but I realize that some of us are annoyed more than others with those sorts of things. The irritants in the GTS are pretty much solved now, save one that occurs somewhere on or inside the passenger door when crossing a perpendicular road defect such as an abnormally raised expansion joint. Gotta find the source of that knock/rattle,

As 71eh did, I used a couple of different frequency sweep generators via blue tooth through the audio system to isolate where and when certain noises were occurring. The freq sweeps helped immensely in tracking one irritant in particular: two driver side door panel rubber isolators that were missing. (I wonder if they got left out at the factory??)

The sweep also gave the necessary support for a Porsche tech to replace a defective rear speaker under wty, a speaker that I could tell was bad even though others didn't notice it. Freq sweeps can be awesome. Just search "frequency sweeps" and you'll come up with a bunch of them. The trick is finding the right one that has the necessary Hz parameters, length, etc. that you need.

The 991 was full of Exclusive Manufaktur options, stitching and leather-covered things, which I believe contributed to the rattles.

That's interesting... I would of thought the plastic trim pieces wrapped in leather (assuming the leather is wrapped over the edges) would have less rattles, since leather instead of plastic would be rubbing or knocking on other pieces...

I have learned over the years, no matter what car you get, no matter how expensive, there will be rattles and squeaks.

Other than the initial rattle and tiny vibration of the exhaust during start up I have noticed hardly any rattles at all. Sure I hear road noise and feel road bumps , but I am pretty pleased with how tight the body and chassis feel. The only real surprise I had was washing the car with the remote key in my pocket and every time the spray hit the frunk or trunk they popped open. Found out from my son, Ryan, who sells Porsches that you need to put the key inside the car when washing. I told him I would have to mark his evaluation down for not telling me and he laughed and reminded me of the great deal he gave me, ha.

Now years of racing in loud cars from Miatas to Vipers to a Boss 302S may have made my hearing less than acute, but I am pretty pleased with how quiet or rattle free my Cayman GTS is -- even more amazing as it is 69 of the first 2024s made. Heck my wife even finds it easy to chat in and she complains about my Viper GTS and even the Mach 1 I had before the Cayman.

As per Willy, both of my 718s have been and remain relatively noise and vibration free. Road noise/road harshness for sports cars is expected, especially in the hard-riding GT4. However, all has been very good overall and well within my expectations, especially considering the horrid state of urban roads these days. Porsche buzzes, rattles and such have been non-existent or at least minimal.

The new Cayenne is amazingly solid and quiet, even more so than the preceding 2019 Turbo. Cayennes offer superb handling, maneuverability (love the 4-wheel steering) and control to go along with a super solid feel and great comfort, impressive for such a large, heavy vehicle.

Thanks for the key-in-the-car tip when washing! I never thought much about it nor did I ask, just figuring I'd deal with it. Now I have a workaround!

Cool to hear you got the Cayenne , Tim, and I may join you in a year of two as my wife wants to step up from the Macan, she thinks it is too small , which is hilarious to me since there are only 2 of us! Almost 47 years of marriage and 42 years racing and she never complained once about me buying tires. brake pads, and more so I imagine I will have a Cayenne in my future, haha.
