The label on the broken side is in fact ATE, brake parts manufacturer. This is simply the cap of a brake fluid reservoir. I would hazard a guess that it was put down there to neutralise an annoying rattle.

That would make it the second weird part I've found the PO used to eliminate a rattle.. The other one was some kind of black rubber cylinder pushed in between the engine mount and the exhaust manifold heat shield.Thom wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2024 9:20 am The label on the broken side is in fact ATE, brake parts manufacturer. Nothing wrong with a good piece of rubber well placed... the air intake assembly on mine is quite tight and goes through the round opening to the fender, with 3" tubing all the way down from the cone filter near the horns up to the compressor inlet. The rubber couplers touch the frame at different locations and are why the assembly doesn't move around... well ok, hand over the cone of shame.

I'm afraid my car doesn't have the cover. There's no mounting point it seems.Tom wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2024 9:07 amMake sure your console has those three mounting holes for the cover (circled in my picture), just to make sure it wasn't a part they added mid-production or something. That said, I personally had to replace those pipes on my car, since they were crumpled and leaked at the firewall no matter what I tried, so very possible someone did the same on your car and didn't bother to put the cover back on.... PM or email me your address...Belgian951 wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2024 9:03 amThat's very generous of you! Thanks! I can't even find the part number for the cover so this would be a great helpTom wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2024 8:50 am Thanks for the follow up. You had me stumped initially, but that's the only conclusion I could reach based on the pics. If you want the cover off my spare heater console, just let me know. Based on other recent shipments, DHL to you would be about $35 (and I'll throw in a FQS key) so maybe cheaper to get one locally....?FQS key is also welcome!

Those letters are ATE, short for Alfred Teves Maschinen. A German automobile brake parts manufacturer. They supply parts to Porsche. Perhaps it is a brake fluid reservoir cap.Belgian951 wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2024 8:31 am Update:
I replaced the DME and checked this mystery part again.
I could just pull it out and it's not attached to anything. It also doesn't look like it's part of the car, but is some kind of cap of some kind. It has the letters ARTE on it. Seems like a brand of some kind.
As for the cover, it seems like I'm missing it!

Just for reference my '90 German spec car also has that cover. It would not surprise me that US spec cars were first fitted with it, as Americans probably love burning their feet on exposed hot coolant pipes earlier than others.Tom wrote: Sun Mar 24, 2024 12:21 pmI wonder if someone has been in there before because I think you are missing a cover that runs over those heater pipes.
