You mean for the Athena gasket? Skimming just the head is no problem. But skimming the block to change the head gasket is a non-starter for me. I blow them too often. :)

I'll check out your link. Are people having good luck with them?

No just the head. I only know of one fitted so far as we just got them but he is heading for dyno tomorrow and has a 500+hp goal which he should achieve. These are used in much higher boost situations than we have in our cars, without issue, so is a tried and proven technology. If you use this style of gasket you can probably say good bye to blowing HG. Thats the hope anyway

Call me crazy, but that Vulcan HG looks extremely similar to the Revline/Athena gasket in my video.... Has anyone changed one of those gaskets yet on a 944? Can you change it without skimming the block?

Too new for anyone to have done one yet. Yes I believe its the same gasket. I think athena was bought out by SCE.
Only the head needs a slight re skim(2 thou) not the block. As I said, this is tried and tested in many other engines, so just new to our M44.

Just reading the installation guide from SCE regarding the vulcan cut head gasket and noticed down the bottom it says Athena-SCE Inc so these are100% same gasket.

Thanks for confirming that my gasket is the same as the Vulcan one, and great video, thanks. Gustaf had to commission these when I got mine, so maybe that got Athena thinking and they decided to put them into production.... I did send an email to SCE yesterday asking if they were the same, and will report back if they respond.

Originally Joshua Gorgeio(sp) from Valley cylinder heads was organising them to make more but due to workload, he couldn't go ahead, so another 944 guy picked up the ball and got a group buy organised for 40 of them I think. I am hoping now they are tooled up they can make this a regular product but I bought 2 just in case that doesn't happen. Either way you are lucky to have one as at this point they are very rare. Definitely state of the art and I doubt I'll need the second one but windows like this don't open very often, so had to jump on when I had chance

Boostfeen brought up a good point in the 'Big Studs' thread.... Do you need to re-torque the studs after the first heat cycle when using these Vulcan gaskets?

Headgasket failure is 80% caused by tuning issues. If your tuning is off nothing will help you keep it all together. good building and truing practice has worked for decades. There also has been a steady advance in the quality of all good parts. Some folks seem to be better at selling their 'miracle' parts as completely revolutionary stuff....
the engine I just finished up is using an off the shelf GT35 turbo (not even a gen2!) and i'm making 450/450 to the wheels at a track usable boost and over 400ft lbs before 3500 rpm - its designed to run for years. its using a cometic gasket on Darton sleeves....both been available for 20 years. If you know how to build them they work.
