That's 100% true! We had a cars and coffee at my house a few years ago with quite a few guards red cars, and there were definitely variations in shades -- subtle, but clear. I had a brand new 991 in Guards and it was slightly different than the original paint on my 944, and slightly different than the official bottle of Guards touch up paint. For discrete parts that are not part of or immediately next to other parts of the same color, slight deviations in color are imperceptible to most mortals, but if you are trying to paint a door or fender or a portion of a panel, that's where even tiny differences will show to the naked eye.Stormy_Monday wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2025 12:06 pm I had partial respray on my 2006 Boxster. Body shop said they've seen multiple guards red on porsches. And not just from fading

Sneaky, but effective! Are you still including a Red (or maybe White) center dot?Tom wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2025 12:12 pmThe one on the left is the close match, and the one I use. The one on the right was just a decoy to make people miss the near-perfect one on the left. It was my 'clever' trick to make people think it wasn't that close -- until they zoomed in and realized it was sooo close they didn't even notice it was there at first.![]()

That was a whole separate project, so no I haven't done those in the last few years, but I'll see what I can do.Bob Z wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2025 12:58 pmSneaky, but effective! Is the one you painted on the left? What is the one on the right? That one does not look close.![]()
I think a white dot would be better for me anyway.Tom wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2025 1:10 pmThat was a whole separate project, so no I haven't done those in the last few years, but I'll see what I can do.Bob Z wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2025 12:58 pmSneaky, but effective! The center dot is a little more cherry red than GR, but they all seem to be that way... I honestly don't know if I still have any centering tools, but that was more of an eccentricity than necessity anyway....

I never did them in white if memory serves, and don't have any white film. They are easy enough to make though -- you just need to get a sample of white vinyl wrap and a set of hole punches from Amazon.Bob Z wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2025 1:17 pmI think a white dot would be better for me anyway.Tom wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2025 1:10 pmThat was a whole separate project, so no I haven't done those in the last few years, but I'll see what I can do.Bob Z wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2025 12:58 pm

I think that reflection is the lift's plastic drip pan and runners, and the 450SL catalytic converter and pipes.notny41 wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 9:20 am very cool @Tom ! Thanks for posting this - will probably come in handy for me at some point - will be off to Menards for a can.
