The 968 LSD is shared with other Porsche and Audi models, but it doesn't fit in the 5 speed 951, 944, 924 gearboxes. M-Factory makes an affordable LSD for our cars.
good to know that the 968 transaxle is different animal! Thanks for pointing that out!
Also, thanks for the lead on the M-Factory unit - unless I'm mistaken, theirs is a helical/Torsion LSD. I was hoping for a clutch type but, I suppose that's based entirely on knowing what a clutch type feels like and not having any direct experience with a Torsion. Also knowing that a Torsion is effectively open when unloaded - maybe this doesn't matter in practical application though, I don't know..
A Torsen type LSD is very unobtrusive, you rarely feel any bad behavior. It's quite nice on a street car.
As far as the Torsen diffs becoming like an open diff when unloaded- just make sure you don't set up the suspension so the rear tires are unloaded during hard acceleration and you'll be OK.

Thanks! I'm mostly concerned with corner entry, actually. I picked up a habit of trail braking from racing motorcycles and I worry the torsion unlocking will make the rear unpredictable in that scenario. Can you comment on the behavior when trail braking?

Unfortunately I can't comment on trail braking. Most of my driving is done in hilly terrain, so I tend to brake early and gently to keep the brakes from overheating on the long downhill sections.
Have you ever locked up a rear tire, or heard a tire skip/scritch when trail braking? If so, that might be the limit where a clutch type lsd would be needed.
