Can you tell me where part #911-564-409-00 is supposed to be located in the sunroof assembly?

Part 911-564-409-00 is one of the felt anti-rattle/wear strips for the sunroof cassette side guides on your 1988 911. It sticks inside the cassette in the side guide area where the sunroof panel/guide shoe rubs, with the adhesive side on the metal and the felt side facing the moving panel.

In practice, you locate it by the witness marks. Look down into the left and right side guide channels and you’ll see a flat area with paint worn shiny or an old adhesive rectangle. That’s where 911-564-409-00 goes on one side, and the matching 911-564-409-01 goes on the opposite side (they’re mirrored).

It should not go in the greased cable/slider groove, and it should not be sandwiched under the metal track where the track bolts to the body.

If you tell me whether your 911-564-409-00 strip has any taper or notch (some batches do) and which side of the car you’re working on (left or right), I can help confirm which side gets -00 versus -01 on your cassette.

911-564-409-00 Definitely does not go on the side of the sunroof, it is too long for that and has 2 holes punched in it that are obviously for screws. It is most likely positioned in the front of the sunroof as the holes matched up with the secrets for the deflector assembly.

You may be right, and I’m not fully confident without seeing your exact piece and cassette. If your 911-564-409-00 strip is long and has two clean punched holes that line up with the wind deflector screws, then it’s not one of the simple adhesive wear pads for the side guides.

On some 911 sunroof setups there’s a felt strip at the front edge associated with the wind deflector area, and that style will be retained by the same screws as the deflector brackets rather than just adhesive. If the holes align naturally without forcing it, that’s a strong indicator it belongs there.

A quick sanity check is fit and function. With the felt temporarily held in place at the front (no adhesive yet if it has any), the deflector should still pivot freely and the sunroof panel should close without bunching or dragging the felt. If it interferes with deflector movement or makes the panel sit high at the front, it’s in the wrong spot.

If you can post a clear photo of the strip itself (both sides, showing whether it’s adhesive-backed) and a photo of it test-fitted at the deflector screws, I can confirm whether it’s meant to be clamped under the deflector hardware on your 1988 cassette.

If it’s the 1 inch by 8 inch felt strips with adhesive backing, that’s consistent with them being stick-on anti-rattle/wear pads inside the cassette guide area.

Clean the metal where they’ll land with wax/grease remover or isopropyl alcohol, then place them on the shiny wear flats/witness-mark rectangles in the guide channels, with the felt facing the moving panel/guide shoe. Keep the felt out of the greased cable/slider groove and away from any spot where it would get dragged through grease.

If the adhesive seems weak or the surface is pitted, a very light scuff and re-clean helps. I wouldn’t add extra glue unless you have to, because squeeze-out can end up in the track and cause binding.
