Short answer, yes. A modern turbo would improve lag and power band. But you would need custom fabrication. You can find kits for Garrets.

Stock turbos can be rebuilt by Evergreen Turbos with modern components. Perform really well.

Search for Xona turbos on this board being sold by Chris White. He has custom fabricated mounting kit for our cars.

If you want to win AX based on raw time and not PAX, then yes, it’s the wrong car. Sure, the most gifted driver can pull off miracles in any car, but alas that is not the reality for most of us. The rest of us need a better platform to get near the top.

Interestingly our local Porsche club ran what we call Motorkhanas. Similar to your Auto X but on much smaller, tighter layouts. So surely a 944 turbo would be even worse in this situation. However Sean Buchanan won the title a number of times in his '86 944 turbo. Admittedly he's a Porsche mechanic and has done a number of mods to this car but prior to him moving to a 3lt 16v turbo setup, he won with his old 2.5 8v running Vitesse turbo and software. Yes, wider stickier tyres and improved suspension, but nothing that most people haven't run. Learning how to set the geometry up was a game changer. Worth playing around with that to get the nose to be ultra responsive.

Oh, and do you have an LSD? Another improvement we found was switching over to the R&P from an S2. Shortens the final drive by about 15% but really livens these cars up.

I did one AX in my 944 and these were my takeaways:
- I am thrashing my car to death
- Miatas are always going to be faster than 944s
- My 944 feels much more at home on a road circuit

Just my opinion. I'm sure a well prepped car and a very skilled driver could reverse those statements.
