I found the source of my PS leak. The tiny approx 18" x 1/4 " hose shrunk and detached from the rack.. I installed a new hose but then the rack started to leak by the passenger side boot. I purchased a new one and was surprised to find only two zip ties to hold it in place. If the system is a sealed unit seems to me that zip ties are not going to hold boot in place.
Poking around most rebuild videos show steel hose clamps. Has anyone had luck getting rid of leaks just by using real clamps? 1990 S2 45k miles

The zip ties simply hold the boot on the rack. They don't seal oil in, there's a proper oil seal underneath the dust boot. I use zip ties to hold the boots on and they work just fine. If you have an oil leak you should consider rebuilding the steering rack.

Before I spend what I expect is going to be at least $1k to have the seals replaced I can get used to wiping up a 3" dia. spot in the garage every once in a while.
Thanks for your response!
PS: the 944 is in AZ where I spend my winters. I have minimal tools there. Here in central OR where I spend most of my time I have a lift and tools that I have been collecting for 60 yrs. I have considered driving it home next spring but have been advised that a 944 is not a car you want to drive 1300 miles even tho it has a had a major service 6 mos ago.

If it just had a major service, I'm not sure I'd worry too much about driving that far.07turbeaux wrote: Tue Apr 01, 2025 2:16 pm PS: the 944 is in AZ where I spend my winters. In my opinion, these cars like to be driven.
I bought my '88 in DC and drove it ~1500 miles back to Oklahoma. No issues whatsoever.
This September, I'm planning on driving up to Ohio for the "944 Fest". That'll be over 2k miles round trip.
I kind of look at it like this...
If something is going to happen (mechanically), it's just as likely to happen driving around in AZ as it is driving to OR.
Whatever you decide, I wish you luck!
Cheers
Brian
