Modifying 912 motor

I have a hot rod 912 with a 1.7L motor using Solex. Is there a kit I can install to lodify it to an EFI system?

No personal experience converting a 912, but here's an $8,600 kit for the 912 that appears to come with everything all sorted out (and even then it recommends dyno tuning).

For something simpler, I wonder if you could adapt one of the all-in-one throttle-body EFI kits made for the air-cooled VWs, like this:

This is an Aircooled VW specialty place but there latest fuel injection system is based on the latest Holey ECU, the advantage is you can get it tuned at almost any tuning house anywhere you live.

I would call Aaron at Zim's about their 356 EFI kit. I know he has a solution for the 4 cyl 912.

You say "1.7L motor"...do you mean 1.6 (stock displacement) or 1720 "big bore" motor (after market kit) OR....do you mean 1.7L 914 motor (type IV) ????? Inquiring minds, want to know.... AG81 is spot on....Zim's can do any of these motors.
Saw my 1st Porsche, in 1962, at age 11, whilst riding with Dad in his VW, in Tucson, AZ.
Love at 1st sight.... :shifty: Now, 35 Porsches later.....what can I say.

Hi Guys,

I have a 1968 912 with a 1720 big bore kit. Weber carbs. I love the 912 and drive it a lot. Getting anyone to work on carbs is virtually impossible although there is one shop that does a decent job.

I am thinking and investigating going to an EFI system. The prices are all over the map. The most expensive is from the mentioned Cognito Moto for $8,600. Then I went to Zims website and priced out a EFI conversion for $400.00 (how can this be?).

I am going to continue to pursue options but has anyone gone down this rabbit hole? I think EFI is the future for those who want to drive a lot and not deal with carbs anymore.

Hi Phil, and welcome to Carpokes!

Which Weber carbs do you have? Someplace in my massive collection of stuff is a suitcase-sized kit of Weber tuning parts. My tuning audience way back when included several popular conversions including choked-down 48 IDA's on your motor. The good news for most is that, once set up correctly, the only time that real tuning is needed is when you are racing, and changes in air density might necessitate a jet and emulsion-tubes adjustment to get to the last couple of ponies. For the rest, the 'tuning' issues are more related to linkages and compensating for growth as the engine heats and cools. Finding someone who knows to adjust the linkage rather than the sync tool has always been a challenge. Then reading plugs and gathering exhaust temps are the serious problem areas these days. If they can't tune it on a laptop, helpless.
