Hey all, some advice on this would be appreciated. I've discovered my rattle, which of course is the heat shield broken off under the exhaust (oil cooler heat shield I think). My question is how you'd resolve this. My current thoughts:
* Ignore it like I do most of my problems
* Try and just weld it in situ, though I'm not sure what metal this is, and all I got is mig.
* Remove the manifold and replace it? Not sure what else I'd have to pull out to get to it. Anyone know the part number here?

PN is 95110705301 and shows still available. Not sure what your "OMG that's too much" number is but you can buy it new from Porsche for $150.

I'm sure there are also used options, but I'm not sure what they go for. I'd replace it. Welding might be as much as a good used one, or even a new one if the welder is greedy (Obviously moot if you try yourself, pretty sure its just steel, but not sure what kind).

That heat shield is actually 3 pieces bolted together and it is possible to remove it with the headers still on the motor. See steps 1 to 11 in our oil seal guide here:

Might be easier to just pull the headers though...
Maybe you'll get lucky and just find some missing bolts. If it's cracked though, any decent TIG welder should be able to fix it up no problem.

Thats a helpful guide, especially since I already have the power steering pump pulled to address the seals. I didn't think it'd be easier from the bottom. Otherwise if it's just plated steel I'll try and just mig it in place, sounds like.
Has anyone ever used a blanket or wrapped that portion of the manifold to forgo the shield? It seems like this is a part prone to issues...

They don't really fail all that often. I'd just fix it and move on personally. I'm not a fan of wrapping headers on these cars -- they add to fire risk by trapping flammable fluids and gunk. Just my 2 cents.

Ah I remember that shield. Replaced mine on NYE two years ago because the original one was so rusted. Must have spent 5 hours on just getting that darn bolt back in...

Amen! I cursed that bolt for hours.Belgian951 wrote: Fri Jan 24, 2025 1:54 pm Ah I remember that shield. Replaced mine on NYE two years ago because the original one was so rusted. Must have spent 5 hours on just getting that darn bolt back in...
It took way too long, but I am happy to report I did get it done without removing the headers. I honestly don't know if it was faster, but I blame stuck bolts.
Via the guide I had to:
- remove the power steering pump
- unbolt the sway bar holder
- remove the oil pressure sending unit
I did not have to remove the oil cooler hoses, nor drain any coolant, thankfully. If you have big hands though, you'd be screwed I think.

Glad you got it out. What ended up being wrong with it?
