No manual, and a high MSRP, but at 479hp, the new S will run circles around every exotic poster car of our youth.

I often comment to my fellow ancient friends that living in the past pining over the glory of " Muscle Car," has become humorous to me. The Muscle Era most refer to in the 60s and very early 70s barely exceeded a decade, yet the Era of Power and Performance we are in now has lasted over 3 decades. My first Viper was a 98 GTS with 450 HP, weighed about 3200 lbs and would scoot down the quarter mile in around 11.9 - 12.4 depending on who was testing it. My 2024 Cayman GTS with 394 Flywheel HP and about the same weight will exceed those times and so will a myriad of other cars. Stock times were in the low 14s for almost any car back in the " Muscle Years " and like the new 911 we have cars today that turn and stop besides only being able to move forward somewhat quickly. These are wonderful times for Porschephiles and car enthusiasts in general and Tom's posting is another perfect example of what unbelievable times we are in in the evolution of the automobile.

It was Car & Driver (The Eighties) that really educated me that light weight, good steering, great handling is where it’s at. Not muscle.

I read a couple of the auto mag articles regarding the new "S" and came away with similar sentiments.

A comment from our Porsche dealership pegged the 992.2 Carrera S largely as a version of the now gone 992.1 GTS. Sounds pretty accurate to me.

So true on all accounts. When we were in High School, we'd go to the Freemont Dragstrip a lot (featured in a number of movies). At least back in the day, you needed a helmet if you car ran faster than 14 second quarter miles, and you needed a driveshaft safety loop and a bellhousing scatter blanket if your car dipped under 13, if I recall correctly.

The crazy part is plenty of folks in their 70s swear cars ran in the 12s, but they were on full drag slicks and heavily modded for the time. Now we wander down to a Dragstrip, stick on a helmet and just hammer the loud pedal and up comes an 11.8 in a Cayman GTS. Crazy now all the machines one can buy that run in the 10s. Not much skill even needed and that is part of what's crazy. I highly suggest to my friends and others that a PCA DE, NASA HPDEs or a Driver/Racing school is a great idea to really appreciate and learn to drive a car that will circle a road course faster than a professional race car from the not too distant past.

Beautiful for sure, but I think it needs the Sport Design Package to reduce black plastic and fill in the grill a bit.
