Good evening,
My son and I were out for a drive this evening and talking about the relatively long gearing in my 2000 996 and it got me thinking. I am not concerned with top speed or fuel mileage. I do prefer the shorter gearing as it makes for a more enjoyable. I was looking up the specs and found this:
1st gear 3.818
2nd gear 2.20
3rd gear 1.516
4th gear 1.216
5th gear 1.024
6th gear 0.841
Final drive 3.444
I would think a change to a 3:70:1-3.90:1 range would be great. Maybe even couple that with a slightly longer 6th to something in the .70:1 range to retain a bit of highway comfort.
My old 69 911 had the 4.44:1 final drive. The top speed was 145-147, the acceleration and fun to drive quotient is fantastic. Since I drive the car on the street, top speed is something I seldom break.
I have a 2005 GTO that came stock with a 3.46:1 rear gear and now has a 4.11:1 gear. I can only describe the transformation as phenomenal. The power out of the corners is breathtaking.
Have any of you ever changed the final drive ratio, or gearsets, in your 996 with a 6 speed? Do any of you know shops that do this? I would like to research this option to liven up the driving experience.
Thank you!

No first hand experience, but the 997 transmission has slightly lower gears and can be used in the 996. There was also a company, Albin, that made an even lower gearset for the 996, but I'm not sure they still make them?

Maybe call these guys and ask what they can do for you. They'd know what's out there.
