I put my feeble brain to work on how a timing tension tool could be made for the balance belt on the early 944 engines. I came up with an idea similar to the timing belt tension tool by Tom, but a little more complex due to the lack of a suitable reference line in the engine. It would consist of two parts. The first is a baseplate that is applied using the timing belt idler pulley and timing belt tensioner roller bolts as reference points. It also contains a pivot hole centered over the lower timing belt shield bolt. In addition, it has two circular slots for arms to go through to apply a twisting action to the belt. Finally it has marks for old and new belt tensions. The second part has two arms that protrude through the slots, a pivot shaft that rotates on the lower shield bolt, and indicator arm. The pivot arms would be designed to contact the web space between the belt nubs, so that nub wear would not affect the reading. The arms will have to be offset from what I drew in order to clear the pivot shaft, but we are just in the idea phase here.
I don't have an arnworx or 9201, I really can't be the implementer, but I thought I'd toss this out there to see if anyone wants to run with it.
Idea for balance belt tension tool
Thinking further, if you are willing to forgo the support of the lower belt shield bolt and just use the baseplate as a pivot, it might be possible to use the water pump and the balance belt idler roller nut for location and support, making it usable for all 944s.

I haven't a clue about what's needed for the tool, but your drawings, design and thought processes are impressive enough for me. I see nary a sight of a feeble brain!

This goes beyond me as a dum-dum but I'm rooting for you and this! This would be great to have.

Idle brain at work again...
If the plastic shroud is stiff enough, how about a tool similar to the timing belt tool. Rotate on the head of the bolt, or just bolt the tool to the rear shroud where the front shroud mounting bolt goes. Use the edge of the shroud as the reference. The plunger drops down to the belt and needs to be able to pivot since the crankshaft won't rotate easily (but all the other pulleys can.) It would need a stiff pivot, like a rod or bolt. Two different tension marks for the two different belt widths. It would appear by eyeballing that this would work even with the automatic tensioner of the newer engines.
Any thoughts?

This this on my list. I have a motor on a stand, but need to put the balance shafts on it so I can experiment with these great ideas and see what works. If it's any consolation, I'm slow but relentless so will get to it eventually.
