Just bought a 1991 944 S2 and trying to replace the timing, counterbalance belts and water pump. Pulled the starter and rotated the engine to find TDC, but there is no OT marking in the small square opening on top of the housing near the firewall. I rotate the crank and match my cam sprocket and counter-balance sprocket with the appropriate markings but no OT in the window. I thought I would try and remove the #1 spark plug but it seems that the 13/16 socket will not even fit the plug sleeve. A 5/8 socket goes down into the sleeve but does not fit the plug. Was just curious and tried my 19 and 18 mm deep socket and they do not fit the sleeve. Tried by 17 mm socket which fits the sleeve but does not appear to be able to seat around the plug (seems too small). Totally perplexed what to do. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

For the plugs, use the Porsche plug wrench from the tool kit, it's the one with the spring.
Another flywheel mark that is usually easier to spot will be in the notch at the very bottom of the clutch housing.

Need some help with this project. I recently purchased a 944 S2 a couple of months ago and wanted to check the cam timing chain, tensioner and slides. I was trying to be extremely careful removing the cam cover bolts, but who ever worked on this car before over torque the bolts. I ended up breaking off one of the cam cover bolts about halfway down. Any suggestions on the best way to extract this bolt. It looks like these bolts have a lip above the threads, so I assume the cover does not just lift over them.

I think the cover will come off once you remove the other screws. Based on no direct knowledge, though, just looking at pictures.

Hopefully you've gotten it off by now? I am a bit worried, though, because you still will have the screw to deal with, and I guess if it was stuck hard enough to break, then.... Maybe some penetrating oil, followed by some tapping, and time to soak? Good luck!
