A bit of Hagerty Love for the 914

Agreed. They are doing much to preserve automotive history and the continued use/enjoyment of the same as loved by so many of us. I view Hagerty as one of several bulwarks against certain worthless, ignorant, redundant, costly, unnecessary, power-mad - you get the picture - bureaucrats worldwide hell-bent on changing and erasing historical and current auto culture.

I still miss the '73 1.7 that I sold a few years ago. Loved the way it drove, the steering, the non-power brakes, the sound of the little engine puttering away inches behind my noggin. Would never have sold it but for limited garage space, already had two 911's. If I lived in a less hilly area I would have kept it, for the little dude had trouble on some of the large hills around here. I had thought about doing an engine transplant to something with a little more oomf, but again, space limitations.

I just read over that 2020 HAGGERTY piece on the 914 and I agree it is a good (if brief) paean to the car. As the old saying goes, "...she'll all that!" Porsche people have been far too sniffy far too long with regard to this little black swan, but of course that's because most are abysmally ignorant not just of the fascinating developmental history of the VW Typ 47/3 (the 914) but of the more 'drilled down deep' details of the relationship Porsche had with VW . There's also the fact that the 914, with Dr. Porsche's favorite mid-engine concept design, arguably has far more in common with "real Porsche" achievements than the rear-engine genre. His most spectacular engineering track achievements include a whole passel of mid-engine racers, not to mention the beautiful Boxster and Cayman (also considered 'entry-level' REAL Porsches, although even they've now been overdeveloped and loaded down with all manner of gee-whiz stuff).

For me, as a long-time 914 enthusiast who has owned quite a few (including a spectacular orange 1970 'Six'), they harken back to an era when sportscars were basic, simple balls-to-the-wall (apologies, ladies!) minimalist vehicles in which to have super fun and go like a bat out of hell! As Porsches continue to evolve from this original ideal into super-sophisticated, land-bound F-35 fighter jets on wheels (and priced accordingly), my money will always be on the 914. For the FULL gen on this spectacular machine, by all means acquire and read the wonderful large-format and fully illustrated hardcover book by Jurgen Lewandowski (2019) titled '50 YEARS PORSCHE 914' ( https://www.amazon.com/Porsche-914-Year ... 3667114583 ) that was published as a testament to the brilliance of this car, on its 50th year. Now out of print, it remains a singular addition to any serious Porsche reference library and although the average price of a good used copy is now on the order of US$300 or so, it is well worth the cost!

No apologies needed, IMHO, since the terms "balls out" and "balls to the wall", in truth, have no sexual connotation; rather, they're meant to describe the position of the spinning balls on a fly ball governor, which consists of two weighted balls attached to a spindle by swinging arms. When a steam engine is running at full speed, the balls are "out". I love the term, personally, but am dismayed that it has a vulgar connotation. I'd love to have a BLZOUT vanity plate on my '23 Boxster GTS 4.0!

More on topic, I've always loved the 914 and owned several -4s when I was younger. I obtained a 1970 914-6 21 years ago -- Porsche's first mid-engine production car!

Carpokes is intended as a family friendly site, so this is a great 'clarification.' The English language is tough that way, with so many words being co-opted into NC17 duty. Rennlist to this day censors out the word 'knob' even though cars have lots of knobs and 99% of the time you end up seeing sentences like "If you just turn up the radio's volume ****, you won't hear any rattles." Used to drive me nu.., er crazy.
