Does anyone know where, when, how that white protective plastic gets onto new Porsches? I've always assumed it was applied at the factory (by a robot of some kind) to help protect the cars from a long journey at sea... Was chatting with a Porsche friend the other day, who believes the plastic is put on the car by hand at the port in the US after it arrives.... Curious if anyone knows or has clues if that is true?

I believe those strips are the extent of the plastic they put on in Germany. I recently saw a picture of a Porsche coming off the boat in the US with nothing but those pieces. They apparently put the rest on at the port. Seems weird to ship it across several oceans without the plastic, but then put the plastic on for the short truck ride to the dealer. On the other hand, the cars do seem to have some kind of a viscous/sticky coating applied to the whole car when it comes off the boat. I guess that protects it from weather and sea risks, whereas the plastic protects it from rocks/birds on the way to the dealer....?

I have seen cars on delivery trucks almost completely covered with this, wheels included. I am fairly sure this is applied before the cars leave the factory, and not just Porsche but also other cars of the VAG group.

It could be either way depending on the manufacturer however, I believe/think it's done at the port upon arrival.
On the ship, most cars especially $$$ ones are below deck anchored down and spaced apart...I've been on one of these ships.
Or the cars are in a 54' container anchored down, two to a container, so these cars are pretty well protected on the journey.
However, when in port the salty air from the harbor, birds bombing away, dust flying around, fall out in the rain...the port will put these plastic cling wraps on for protection prior to delivery.
I use to work for a Toyota Parts Distribution Center and took trips to the manufacturing plants in Kentucky and Japan.
When the cars came off the line they were driven somewhere, I think where they install things like spoilers, camper tops and other things. And that could be where they install these white plastic wraps, but I can't say for sure.
That will be 1 denarius please...LOL!

It may depend on manufacturer. If you google JAXPORT there are a couple video's showing various marks coming off RORO ships with plastic on hoods and other locations. Not sure about Audi as they are almost completely covered, at least on car haulers.

I too have seen the trucks with Audis' here in Colorado, where the cars were completely covered in plastic. Just like when they put some boats into cold storage. I do wonder if they come across the pond like that.ROB III wrote: Wed Jul 26, 2023 4:30 pm Not sure about Audi as they are almost completely covered, at least on car haulers.

this is how my car came off the truck at the dealer. I kind of like the pool noodle on the front. The GT3 behind it had a full cover.

Great looking Boxster GTS and I especially like the silver wheels. After quite a few black wheels on my race/track cars , I am going back to silver or gray wheels of my childhood , ha. Is she a manual or PDK and living in Florida did you go with a lighter interior?

Beige/black interior. And a manual as long as I can still do it.
