The late-great Bruce Anderson used to recommend, all other things equal, to buy the latest version of the 911 that you can afford -- making the point that each year they just keep getting better. There is enormous charm in some of the earlier cars, but in terms of function, I think Bruce is still right. Every year is a little better than the last....

I agree. Excellence Magazine always does a "performance comparo", and the the 992 leads the pack of performance standards.

I have a new one on order which will do well:

Although I have and thoroughly enjoy my 2021 992 C2S, call it nostalgia, the “real” 911’s were 1967 and prior 911 S’s. My 992 is vastly superior in almost every quantifiable way, but, for its day, when I was working on them to pay my way through college, they were the epitome of a serious sports car.

I had four 1969-1973 Porsche 911's (LWB). I was younger and ignored the smell of fuel, no A/C, and oil leaks. They all had mechanical lifters which had to be adjusted at every oil change.

I had PMO's on two cars and Webers on the other two. I changed two cars to electronic ignition. I also had to use racing gas or marina fuel as they didn't like ethanol fuel (I'd mix some 93 octane in when I could).

But yes, they are great pure sports cars. Here is my (ex) '73 RS replica:
